Christmas

A simple birth on Christmas Day
Two thousand years ago
Brought joy and everlasting hope
To this dark world below.
For God so loved the world he gave
His only Son from heaven,
To suffer death upon the cross
That we might be forgiven.
The loving wisdom of our God
No human mind can span;
The depths of his redeeming grace
To suffer death upon the cross
Are fathomless to man.
How may we show our gratitude
For all his words and ways?
With open hearts and humble minds,
And lips to sing his praise.
Here may perhaps from angel lips
A sweeter anthem flow
But not the song of wondering love
None but the ransomed know.

Advent and Christmas are a special time at St Luke’s. We celebrate the birth of our Saviour Jesus Christ. Please join us to celebrate the “reason for the season”, at our Advent and Christmas services.

To help you plan your visit we have included our special services below:
Family Scratch Nativity Service - Sunday 3rd December

Time: 10:30 am

Join us for our fun family nativity service to re-tell the Christmas story together. From the youngest to the oldest, everyone can dress up and take part in our scratch nativity.

Christingle Service - Monday 4th December

Time:
 6:30 pm

A favourite with all ages, this special service gets its name from the Christingle oranges which are used to explore the story of God’s love for the world at Christmas.

During the service each child will have the chance to make a Christingle (everything will be provided), so expect lots of fun and sticky fingers.  At the end of the service the children will light a candle to create a warm, magical glow symbolising the light of Christ that brings hope to people living in darkness.

Each element of a Christingle has a special meaning and helps to tell the Christian story:

  • The orange represents the world
  • The red ribbon (or tape) symbolises the love and blood of Christ
  • The sweets and dried fruit represent all of God’s creations
  • The lit candle represents Jesus’s light in the world, bringing hope to people living in darkness.

To find out more what Christingle is  and its history, visit the The Children’s Society website.
